The Future Is Now

VR hero shooter X8 gets fifth major update

The “Freeplay Park Update” for X8 brings a breath of fresh air to the VR shooter. We reveal what you can expect.

VR developer and publisher Thirdverse has released an extensive update for its 5v5 multiplayer hero shooter X8. Called the “Freeplay Park Update”, the update introduces several new features and improvements to further enhance the gaming experience.

Among the new features is the “Freeplay Park”, a social meeting place in the game where players can hang out, make new friends and create their own games. The area offers various activities such as learning and teaching game mechanics, mini-games such as climbing challenges, knife throwing or a shooting range, as well as a training arena.

A new element of personalization comes in the form of Splat Tags. These are digital slime balls that allow you to leave your stickers in the environment. Splat Tags are available in the X8 Store or can be unlocked via the Event Calendar.

The semi-automatic MONARCH is introduced as a new weapon for the mid-game phase. It opens up new opportunities to invest in armor or skills.

The new “Threat Levels” mode is a kind of ranking for the Demolition mode. Good performances and victories increase your threat level, which is represented by a badge in the main menu.

Based on player feedback, Thirdverse has completely overhauled the weapon recoil and sound systems. The goal is to give veterans a refreshed experience and newcomers a better first impression.

Finally, an improved matchmaking system ensures that players are ready to go before they join a match, eliminating AFK interruptions. This system works with the new Threat Levels feature to create a more competitive and balanced experience.

From a paid title to a free hit

Recently, X8 on Steam for PC VR switched to a free-to-play model. The fourth major update already brought improvements such as a daily login reward system, an interactive weapon shop, optimized matchmaking for better team balance, and a highlighting of the most valuable players after each match.

X8 is a hero shooter from Thirdverse, the studio behind titles such as Swords of Gargantua and Soul Covenant. According to the backstory, a rogue mod brought together characters from different game worlds to compete in 5v5 matches.

In the various modes, players take on the role of the heroes, combining shooting skills with special abilities such as turrets or smoke grenades. Customizable equipment with various weapons and armor can be used to gain a competitive edge.

X8 is available for free on SteamVR and through the Meta Quest Store for Meta Quest 3, Quest 2 and Quest Pro. Paid DLC packs with exclusive skins and characters are also available.
