The successful Japanese mystery adventure game The Exit 8 will be released for Meta Quest in July. This is a complete port.
Japanese VR studio MyDearest Inc. has announced the release of The Exit 8 VR on the Meta Quest Store on July 11, 2024. This is the VR conversion of KOTAKE CREATE’s popular indie game The Exit 8, which is inspired by Japanese subway passages, liminal spaces, and back rooms.
In the game, you are trapped in an endless underground passageway. You must pay close attention to your surroundings to find the exit, “The Exit 8”. You must not miss any anomalies: If you see one, turn back immediately. Otherwise, keep going.
The Exit 8 VR will cost 6.99 $ at launch. Pre-orders pay only 5.99 $. According to the developer, the game takes 15 to 60 minutes to complete. The game is localized in English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
More Indie Hits in VR
Exit 8 VR is not the first indie hit to make the leap into virtual reality. Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a 2010 horror classic, also received an unofficial VR port for Meta Quest this spring.
Indie developer Gordey Eremin announced that Sclerosis: An Amnesia VR Remake for Quest 2 and Quest 3 will be released this spring. This is a reworked version of his Android port “Sclerosis” from 2021.
In November 2023, Eremin already released a PC VR version of Sclerosis, which offers motion control, object interaction and other adaptations for VR. These improvements should also benefit the Quest version.
Short but exciting
I have already played the PC version of The Exit 8 and enjoyed it so much that I recommended it to some friends. Even though the gameplay sounds rather boring at first, it is actually very exciting. While the environment looks the same at first glance, there are various anomalies in random places that need to be discovered.
Some of them are absolutely obvious or even meant to scare the player a bit. But there are also some that only really stand out when you look at them several times. Eyes that follow you. A change in the face of a passerby on the phone or posters that get bigger and bigger are just a few of the things I noticed on my way through the subway.
