Roblox Metaverse Introduces 17+ Experiences and Invites Users to Develop Them

Metaverse platform Roblox has introduced experiences aimed at players 17 years and older. According to the official press release, the company aims to build an immersive platform for communication and connection with safety and civility at its foundation. While people of all ages can use Roblox, last year’s statistics show the platform’s fastest-growing age group is 17-to-24-year-olds.

Earlier this year, the online gaming platform introduced experience guidelines and age recommendations for different experiences. Before June 20, Roblox allocated content for users of “all ages,” “9 and up,” and “13 and up.”

With the update, individuals of age 17 and up will be able to access mature topics and storylines, such as television shows or stand-up comedies. According to the official announcement, such content might contain scenes of intense violence and heavy realistic blood. In addition, there may be romantic themes and moderate crude humor. The “17+” experiences can also include unplayable gambling content and the presence of alcohol.

It’s worth noting that content aimed at ages 13 and up also contains unplayable gambling content. More than that, teenagers can see scenes featuring moderate violence, light realistic blood, and moderate crude humor. However, in this case, parents can choose content that is suitable for their kids.

To provide a safe experience, Roblox will conduct age verification. Individuals wishing to consume or create content for 17 years and older must upload a selfie and a photo of a government-issued document.

“With this approach, we’re providing greater confidence in people’s age and identity. In the future, we may add new age verification methods,” states Roblox’s blog post.

With this update, Roblox allows users to express themselves and monetize their creations. The platform invites individuals to develop “17 and over” experiences to attract more  17-to-24-year-old users, increase engagement, and potentially earn more.
