The Unleashed mod for Half-Life 2 VR adds melee combat, dual wielding, and customizable difficulty to an already excellent VR port.
Half-Life 2: VR Mod is one of the best VR ports ever made and breathes new life into Valve’s classic first-person shooter.
Released on Steam in 2022 with Valve’s blessing, it found numerous fans and has received nearly 5,000 “overwhelmingly positive” reviews to date. Episode 1 and Episode 2 are supported as well. If you want to learn more about the VR port: Lead developer Holger Frydrych gave interesting insights into the development of Half-Life 2: VR Mod in a presentation this summer.
Now, a mod for the mod has been released that adds more VR interactions to the game, making it more realistic and immersive. It is called Half-Life 2: VR Mod Unleashed and was developed by 20-year-old student Vittorio Romeo.
These are the new features
Unleashed first adds universal melee to Half-Life 2 VR. You can now beat up Combine soldiers with any weapon or your virtual hands. You can also physically smash destructible objects like crates. The feature can be fine-tuned or turned off in the menus.
Dual wielding is also new. You can now wield the same or different weapons in each hand: for example, a crowbar in your left hand and a pistol in your right, or two gravity guns at the same time. For this to work, you’ll need to adjust your SteamVR bindings.
The mod also makes the last weapon you equipped automatically go into your holster when you release the grab button. Pressing it again will return it to your hand. This feature can be disabled in the controls menu.

Other features of the mod include physical jumping, a virtual stock for more stability when aiming down sights, and difficulty customization. In the Tweaks menu, you can adjust your and your enemies’ damage, weapon recoil, and bullet spread to make the game much more challenging (or easier).

To play this mod you need Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: VR Mod. Episodes 1 and 2 are also supported. So you can play through the whole game with the enhancements that Unleashed offers.
