The Future Is Now

New Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR video shows off gameplay mechanics

Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR is coming out in a few weeks. In a new video, Ubisoft explains and shows different aspects of the gameplay.

Ubisoft is breaking new ground with Nexus. It’s the first Assassin’s Creed designed from the ground up for virtual reality, the first game in the series to be played from a first-person perspective, and the first to feature three characters from different eras and cities.

In a new video, Creative Director David Votypka discusses the three gameplay elements of parkour, stealth and combat, as well as comfort and accessibility features and the story of Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR.

A true Assassin’s Creed

The environments are open and free-roaming. “You can see it, you can parkour it,” Votypka says, showing off the climbing, jumping, and balancing across the city rooftops.

Cracks and holes in walls will allow you to get a good view of your victims as you prepare for an attack. You will be able to look around corners and take cover by moving your hands instead of your head and torso. To distract guards, simply pick up and throw objects with your hands. If you want to attract them, you can whistle with a gesture through your virtual fingers.

Each of the three main characters, Ezio, Cassandra, and Connor, has an individual melee and ranged weapon. When you get into a fight, you’ll need to block and parry attacks before you can strike. The video shows how you can skillfully combine various spectacular attacks to take down a whole group of enemies.

Designed for comfort and accessibility

To ensure that as many people as possible can play the VR game, Ubisoft has designed Nexus with accessibility in mind, and incorporated a variety of comfort features to combat motion sickness.

These include movement via teleportation and tunnel vision when using smooth locomotion. There’s even an auto parkour mode where you just have to look in the direction you want to go, and the game will do the parkour automatically without you having to press any buttons. Those who get sick during the “leap of faith” can activate a grid that anchors the person in physical space, preventing or reducing nausea.

Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR will be released on November 16th 2023 for Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro. Ben was able to play it in London ahead of time and gather first impressions of the VR game. A full MIXED review will follow at the title’s launch.
