The Future Is Now

Meta Quest 3 will feature eye relief adjustment

Meta Quest 3 will have buttons to adjust the lens depth. To improve comfort and make room for regular glasses.

Yesterday, an unboxing video of the headset leaked onto the web. A closer look reveals two pictograms on the cardboard attached to the headband, indicating eye-relief adjustment.

Apparently, there are two buttons on the inside of the headset that can be pressed to adjust the depth of the facial interface and lenses. Eye relief adjustment is supported by many VR headsets, but not by Meta Quest 2.

Eye relief adjustment offers several advantages: First, by adjusting the lens distance, you can control factors such as visual comfort and field of view. Second, a larger distance allows you to fit regular glasses between your eyes and the lenses. With Meta Quest 2, you have to insert a glasses spacer under the facial interface, which is less convenient.

Meta Quest 3: An upgrade in terms of IPD adjustment as well

The first hints of the eye-relief mechanism were spotted in the Quest 2 firmware earlier this year. “For the most comfortable experience, you can adjust your lens depth by pressing the buttons inside and pulling the headset forward or backward”, the description read.

The eye relief adjustment is not to be confused with IPD adjustment feature, which allows adjusting the distance between the lenses for a sharper image and a better depth perception.

The Quest 3 is an upgrade in this area as well: The distance can now be adjusted stepless and conveniently on the outside of the headset, instead of only three steps on the inside. The supported IPD range is not yet known.

Minimally improved head strap

Another piece of cardboard shows a pictogram of the slightly improved head strap, which tapers into two straps at the back to provide a better fit than the Quest 2’s standard head strap. The Quest 3 video teaser from June already showed the improved head strap. If that’s not enough comfort for you, Meta will probably sell an Elite strap accessory for Quest 3.

Meta Quest 3 is expected to be officially unveiled on September 27 during Meta Connect 2023. The launch could happen at the same time or in the coming weeks.
