The Future Is Now

Medal of Honor: Above And Beyond is shutting down multiplayer

It was one of the biggest VR productions of Meta’s PC VR era. After moderate success, MOHAA’s multiplayer support on Quest & Rift headsets is ending.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond had been in development at Respawn Entertainment (Titan Fall, Apex Legends) since 2016, and was one of the biggest and most expensive VR games Meta had ever commissioned. It was released in December 2020 for PC VR headsets, but fell short of expectations, although the multiplayer was better received than the single-player campaign.

“Respawn’s attempt to bring Medal of Honor to virtual reality is only partially successful: Above and Beyond brings a variety of impressive set pieces to the medium, but combines them with a shallow shooting mechanic,” I wrote in my single-player review of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.

A graphically slimmed down Quest 2 version followed a year later without making a big splash.

Multiplayer is about to be shut down

Three years after the release of the PC VR game the multiplayer mode is being shut down. A note on the US Rift and Quest Store page says that multiplayer will no longer be available starting December 1, 2023. The VR game’s Steam page says nothing of the sort.

No reason for the shutdown is given. It is likely that the VR game is struggling with low user numbers. Respawn Entertainment has not delivered new content or updates for a long time, and fans are probably playing other multiplayer shooters by now. There are many popular alternatives in this genre.

The MOHAA multiplayer shutdown follows the end of Echo VR for Meta Quest, one of the most popular multiplayer titles. The servers were shut down on August 1. Hopefully Meta will announce new, high-profile multiplayer games for its VR platform at Meta Connect 2023.
