The Future Is Now

First flight action game ‘Project Wingman’ takes off on PSVR 2

Project Wingman makes a surprise release for PS5 and PSVR 2 with six exclusive VR missions.

Project Wingman was originally released for Windows PCs in 2020 and Xbox One in 2021. The PC version also supports virtual reality. The flight game has been compared to the Ace Combat series and offers pick-up-and-play action.

The PS5 version is called Project Wingman: Frontline 59 and comes with six new missions designed specifically for PSVR 2, providing about 2 to 3 hours of additional gameplay. Like the rest of the game, these missions can be played without a headset.

The studio implemented headset haptics, so you can feel when enemy planes fly by, while eye tracking lets you switch between targets with your eyes.

Project Wingman: Two modes, but no multiplayer

The basic game consists of a solo campaign and the so-called Conquest mode. The former takes place in an alternate-history Earth. “Skim the cold waters of the Bering Strait, assault tanks in the brutal Yellowstone magma fields, and face overwhelming odds,” reads the description. There is no multiplayer functionality.

The Conquest mode has roguelite elements. You’ll conquer territories and face hordes of enemies, elite squadrons, and powerful bosses. You’ll engage in intense dogfights and large-scale ground assaults. After you die, you can buy new planes, recruit allies, and try again.

“Discover the pure adrenaline rush of dodging railguns and geothermal weapons, striking against mechanized fortresses and skimming the ground with gatling guns and wing-mounted rocket launchers,” writes the developing studio Sector D2.

Project Wingman: Frontline 59 is available now on the Playstation Store and costs $29.99.
