BAM Gameplay – How does the mixed reality game work?
Dirk Van Welden, Creative Director at I-Illusions, describes BAM as a cross between Quake 3 and Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros.
A digital arena is placed in the middle of the physical space, where up to four players compete against each other using small robots equipped with jetpacks. The size of the arena can be freely adjusted to make the most of the space available. However, the basic dimensions of the game remain the same.
In addition to different robot designs, there are three game modes to choose from. You can try to hold a crown as long as possible, bomb your opponents, or simply box your opponents into the abyss outside the tabletop arena.
The different arenas offer different layouts and interaction opportunities for higher jumps. Power-up items will also occasionally be dropped into the arena by a spaceship. These give your character a temporary advantage, such as a stronger punch or a whirlwind attack.
While BAM is primarily designed as a party game with a focus on local multiplayer (you can play with multiple Quest headsets in the same physical space) and online mode, there is also a single player mode with bots.
Those who are only interested in BAM’s single-player mode should think twice before paying the full price. There is nothing else to do apart from arena battles against computer-controlled opponents, which currently only have one difficulty level. There is neither a story mode nor challenges.
According to the developers, a tutorial mode is planned, and more content will be added in future updates.
How much does BAM cost and on which VR headsets will the party game be available?
BAM was released together with Meta Quest 3 on October 10th 2023 and costs 15 Euros. The multiplayer game also works on Meta Quest 2 and the Quest Pro.
However, the Quest 2 only supports monochrome pass-through, so you will only see the physical environment in black and white. Quest 3 and Quest Pro offer color passthrough.
