The Future Is Now

Asgard’s Wrath 2: Deep dive trailer reveals hunting, crafting, and Ally Gods

Oculus Studios releases the next installment of their in-depth Developer Deep Dive and introduces a new area called “The Hideout”.

It’s just over a month until Meta’s triple-A VR game Asgard’s Wrath 2 launches for Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro on December 15th. Senior Producer Mari Kyle has been revealing new gameplay and story details in a monthly deep dive since the game was announced this summer. This month, Kyle continues to reveal new role-playing elements that await you in the divine world.

Ally Gods in The Hideout

After Mari Kyle introduced the divine transformations, an optional game mode with procedurally generated VR dungeons, and a new heroine with living weapons in the previous videos, this time it’s all about the central hub of the game: “The Hideout”.

The Hideout is located in an area called the “Forbidden Desert”. Here you can hunt, cook, craft, and receive quests from allied gods. The “Great Hall of the Sun” serves as a central gathering place. This is where you will meet your first allied gods, such as Bes and Ptah, who will provide you with materials and weapons.

“Bes is a merchant and one of Horus’s oldest allies. Bes runs the bazaar in the Hideout, which is one of the first areas you unlock. In the bazaar, you can craft common materials, potions, and a whole range of items that you’ll find useful whenever you’re in your mortal form out in the world of Ancient Egypt,” Kyle explains in the video. Ptah, on the other hand, is a craftsman who improves weapons and armor for you. Later, Polydeuces and Castor will join you and help you with hunting equipment and food preparation.

“As you explore the Great Sand Sea, you’ll collect anything from game meat to eggs to pomegranates, and you’ll be able to bring them back to the Hideout where you can cook those things into different recipes,” says Kyle. Each dish in the game has special effects that benefit you and your companions.

Asgard’s Wrath 2: How the hunt works

“Hunting is a very important part of the Asgard’s Wrath 2 universe,” Kyle explains. “The Great Sand Sea and all the worlds in Asgard’s Wrath 2 feel like living worlds with wildlife and creatures that you can hunt for varying purposes.”

In addition to ranged weapons, trapping is a particularly effective hunting tool. Traps can be used to create area damage, which can also provide strategic advantages when fighting other creatures.

You can also build bait to attract particularly strong predators. These mini-bosses drop special loot that can be used to upgrade armor, weapons, or brew potions.

Minigames and combat challenges

In addition to hunting, cooking, and crafting weapons, the Hideout also offers several relaxing activities. You can pass the time with mini-games like the slingshot range or discus throwing. Fishing is also possible in Asgard’s Wrath 2, and you can collect useful resources for your cooking pot along the way.

While exploring the desert area around the hideout, you will find the temple of the goddess Neith and can participate in combat challenges.

“In those combat arenas, you’ll have a number of ritual challenges to overcome. If you are able to overcome them — and by the way, you have to be a very, very, very fierce, powerful warrior to do it, it’s gonna require a lot of skill — if you’re able to overcome them, you can unlock an endless mode for that arena and also some additional perks” says Kyle.
