The Mirrorscape AR gaming platform mixes virtual tabletop games with the real world, including Starfinder and Pathfinder.
Paizo Publishing is best known for its adventures and rulebooks for Dungeons & Dragons. The company’s tabletop role-playing games, Starfinder (science fiction) and Pathfinder (fantasy), will soon be brought to Augmented Reality. The AR RPG platform Mirrorscape (formerly ARcana) brings virtual game boards, fortresses and characters right to your living room table.
Initially, iOS and Android devices such as tablets will serve as windows into the virtual world. When held in front of a real game table, virtual dungeons, cult sites, miniatures, and dice appear. Later, Mirrorscape plans to also support AR headsets.
Starfinder and Pathfinder on Quest and Apple Vision Pro?
Mirrorscape has brought the Snapdragon Spaces AR development environment on board for the implementation. So far, the developers have not announced any supported headset models.
However, brand manager Eric McIntire already mentioned on the official Discord that the team will focus on VR headsets like Meta’s after a PC implementation. The controls could be implemented similarly to Demeo, McIntire writes. A similar mixed reality mode on Quest 2 or Pro is therefore not unlikely.
After the announcement of the Apple Vision Pro, McIntire also expressed his enthusiasm for Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset on the official Discord, especially because of the support for the used Unity engine.
The Mirrorscape platform was developed primarily for tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. Later on, however, it will also support war games like Warhammer 40,000. The RPG creation system offers assets for various scenarios, including fantasy, adventure, sci-fi, horror, and war.
The AR implementations of Starfinder and Pathfinder are also compliant with the Open RPG License (ROC). They are intended to be as close to the original as possible, explains Paizo publisher Erik Mona. Pre-registration for Mirrorscape is available in the App Stores for iOs and Android.
