It appears that Apple’s computer of the future will not benefit from Apple Intelligence, at least in the current first iteration of the device.
Apple’s new AI initiative took center stage at WWDC 2024. Unfortunately, Apple Vision Pro will have to do without Apple Intelligence, at least for now: The AI features were announced for the latest iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems, which will be released this fall, but not for visionOS 2, the upcoming iteration of Vision Pro’s operating system.
Only the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) with the A17 chip and Macs and iPads with the M series chip are supported. The Apple Vision Pro has an M2 chip, so it would theoretically be ready for Apple Intelligence. However, due to the extremely high resolution of the Vision Pro displays, the chip is already at its performance limit, according to a Reddit user who claims to have spoken to an Apple developer.
AI is a key technology for VR
It looks like we’ll have to wait for a Vision Pro 2 to see Apple Intelligence in action on an Apple headset. According to one report, a direct successor won’t be released until late 2026 at the earliest.
Even if the Apple Vision Pro doesn’t directly benefit from Apple Intelligence, it’s still based on a lot of AI technology. Features like hand tracking would be difficult to implement in this form without advancements in machine learning.
