The Future Is Now

Apple teased two camera systems for immersive video content creation

At WWDC, Apple announced two camera systems that will facilitate the creation of immersive video content for Apple Vision Pro.

At WWDC 2024, Apple announced two camera systems and associated workflows for capturing and editing Spatial Video and Immersive Video.

Spatial Video is Apple’s format and name for stereoscopic video captured with Apple Vision Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro (Max). Later this year, Canon will introduce a lens for its EOS-R7 digital camera (not to be confused with Canon’s new 144° lens) that allows users to capture high-quality spatial video even in challenging lighting conditions. With an update to Final Cut Pro, creators will be able to edit the videos on their Mac and add immersive effects and titles. Vimeo will provide the platform for uploading and sharing spatial videos and will release a native Vision Pro app for this purpose.

When it comes to Immersive Video, Apple is working with Blackmagic Design. Immersive Video is Apple’s format and name for 180-degree stereoscopic 8K video with spatial audio. Apple has already released a number of such videos for Vision Pro. With Blackmagic’s first camera system, the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive, creators will be able to shoot high-quality immersive video with a resolution of 8,160 x 7,200 pixels per eye and a frame rate of 90 hertz. The camera will also be available later this year. An update to DaVinci Resolve Studio will make Blackmagic’s editing software compatible with immersive video.

It is good that Apple is helping to bring camera systems and workflows for immersive video content to market. This is the only way to help creators and companies realize the potential of immersive video technology and ensure a wider distribution of such content. It’s also an area that Meta has stayed out of, so hopefully we’ll see more innovation and competition in the future.
